How do I get started?
The hunting farm staff (slaughtering and caping) are usually very familiar about what needs to be done. Just be clear on what you want to do with your trophy. Be specific, you want a “Shoulder Mount”, or you just want a “Skull Mount” or just want a “Flat Skin”.
What should I keep in mind for handling of flat skin trophies?
If you are going to be in the bush for a few days, take a large ± 210 litre drum and fill it with water, add a shovel of course salt and half a cup of Dettol into the mix. Put the flat skin into this solution for one day, and thereafter let it hang to dry. If you are coming out of the bush immediately after the hunt, the workers can put coarse salt on the skin. Keep it in a cool room and hand it to a taxidermist asap.
What are the different timelines? How long will I wait for my Skull Mount/ Shoulder Mount/ Full Mount/ Flat skin?
Below is a timeline to show the estimated times different processes/trophies will take from start of work until completion. Please note that we work on waiting lists according to a work schedule, and below is no guarantee that your trophy will be completed accordingly.
How should I treat my trophies out there on my hunting trip?
Field Treatment is the most important step to ensure good quality Skins
Preparation of all capes:
- Remove all excess fat, blood and meat
- Wash off all blood and dirt
- Soak capes for a minimum of 3 hours, or preferably overnight in a saturated salt solution of about 2kg of coarse salt / 100 litres of water together with a bactericidal solution (Dettol), about 50 ml/100 litres of water
- Remove capes from solution. Open capes on a clean surface with the flesh side facing up and cover the skin liberally with salt.
How will my completed trophies be delivered to other countries?
We use a shipping agency, that specializes in obtaining the correct permits for export from South Africa, that will ensure your trophies are securely packed, go through customs clearance and are shipped to your home country. Just as a guideline, we will require the following documents (subject to change based on guidance from shipping agency):
- Professional Hunter Register
- Outfitters Register
- Hunting Permit from Farm Owner
- Farm exception permit number where hunt took place
- Outfitters Licence Certificate
- Professional Hunter’s Certificate
- Combretum Taxidermy Treatment Certificate
I want to have my flat skin tanned and I want to have something special made from the leather. How will this work? (We refer to CMT (Cut, Make, Trim process)
If you want a specific item made from your flat skin, the flat skin will be sent to the tannery for tanning /leathering according to your specific colour choice.
Thereafter another price will be added for work done (CMT) meaning that will cover the cutting, making and trimming into the final product.
Please let us know what your ideas are, or your special requests through e-mail and we will find a way to help you.
Explain payment process:
We process our work based on a waiting list and work schedule. We will e-mail your Ngulube Taxidermy Invoice, requesting either full/ half deposit payment.
As soon as we receive your proof of payment through e-mail (please quote your invoice ref number), your items will be placed on the work schedule.
When your items are completed, we will send you an e-mail and SMS requesting collection, and if applicable final payment of the outstanding amount.

Let us know what you are looking for and we will source it for you. Please note any items leaving the country require special tanning certificates and letters to accompany the items. We will gladly assist you in this.

Flat skins go through a tanning process where the raw skin is cleaned and then soaked in various solutions to ensure it keeps its beauty over time.
We require full payment on flat skins before we can start the tanning process which takes 6 – 8 months.
Your flat skin can retain its original hair, or can be turned into leather which is coloured according to your choice (any colour, except white is offered).
